Why Having ADHD Matters

There are different types and severities of ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder). There are different causes and different manifestations. The
bottom line is that this type of health problem can look very different in different people. Some
days we see mild cases and some days we see very severe cases.

The other bottom line is that ADD and ADHD are very real disorders that can cause many
problems. Most people area aware of the issues related to school and behavior. Most people
are not aware that ADD and ADHD are also linked to substance abuse, issues with law
enforcement, difficulty in the workforce, difficulty controlling emotions, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and
obesity.

Brain mapping helps determine if there is a neurological cause of the ADD and ADHD
symptoms. Brain maps are a non-invasive, computerized, EEG analysis of brain function.
Maps help find the cause of ADD and ADHD. Maps also point the way in the targeted, non-drug
management of the problem. We often use advanced neurofeedback, brain rehab exercises,
and nutrition to strengthen the weak area of the brain. We have had great success in the last
decade using this program.

ADD typically does not go away on its own. There is a common misconception that people
outgrow ADD. That is rarely the case. ADD can, and often does, manifest in a different way
when people are older. ADD research pioneer Daniel Amen reported “Thirty to sixty-five percent
of children diagnosed with ADD will have disabling symptoms into adulthood.”
