Exercise Is A Must

Exercise is a must for all of us.  If we can, it is important to move our body on a regular basis.
We recommend at least 150 minutes of cardiovascular exercise during the course of a normal
week for most of our patients. This includes adults and children. One of the best parts is
walking counts. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150
minutes of moderate aerobic activity weekly.

Exercise helps modulate our brain, our heart and our immune system. If you can move on a
regular basis, you really should. I know most of us are busy. But the reason why not is really
the reason we should. The busier and more stressed out we are, the more we need to exercise
and strengthen the systems of our body. Exercise may even give us longer life. Internet health
guru, Dr. Joseph Mercola, reported 20-25 minutes of daily walking could add three to seven
years to your life.

Don’t forget about the kids. A study done by the University of British Columbia found regular
aerobic exercise increases the size of the area of the brain responsible for learning and
memory. In most of the moderate to severe cases of ADHD we work with, kids are not getting
enough exercise. Remember to walk the dog and try to get to the park on the weekend. I know
this can be challenging during the winter months, but the results are worth your effort.
We live in a world in which the rates of ADHD, autism, depression, anxiety, chronic pain,
memory problems, and addiction are exploding. All of these conditions are not 100% hardwired.
It matters what we do on a regular basis. Making small changes every day, including regular
exercise, can result in big changes over time.

For those getting in their cardiovascular or aerobic exercise on a weekly basis I want to
celebrate with you. Great job! Try adding in 2 days of strength training. Keeping the muscles
strong is important for longevity. We will talk more about this soon in the blog. Have a great
