ADHD: Why Getting To The Root Cause Matters
It has been estimated that up to 66% of people diagnosed in childhood with ADHD will continue to have problems into adulthood. Many times the hyperactivity component will get better and people think they have outgrown the core issues of ADHD. We are seeing more and more adults struggling with focus, impulsivity, emotional control, decision making and cognition. Most report problems that started in childhood.
Drugs often just cover up the symptoms. This often comes with a price. The price are the side effects many people have to endure. It is well documented that the drugs commonly used for ADHD can cause appetite suppression, abdominal pain, poor sleep, and headaches. We often hear patients report depressive episodes and suicidal thoughts as well. It is important to know the potential side effects of any medication and consider the alternatives.
Brain maps help us determine if there is a neurological reason behind the symptoms of ADHD. Maps are a 15 minute, non-invasive, computerized, EEG analysis of brain function. If we find a weak or unbalanced area, we can often use advanced neurofeedback, brain rehab exercises and nutrition to strengthen the area. There are several studies that report neurofeedback to be equal to that of the ADHD drugs in the reduction of symptoms. In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics recognized neurofeedback as a Level 1: “Best Support” Intervention for ADD. We have used this type of management program for over a decade with great success.

“I cannot believe the difference I have seen. I have seen improvements in memory, name recall, and word recall. Also, I can actually get things accomplished rather than feeling stuck. All of this happened in just a few visits. It has been an amazing journey to see these improvements.”
